Truth

I’ve always believed there was some type of higher power or ultimate justice in this world, bigger than my own, small understanding of life. I am attempting to act under the assumption that you should never dislike people, though you might not understand or agree with the things they might do.  I try to direct any feeling of contempt and anger for humanity to harmful and hurtful actions that result due to misunderstandings.  You never know when someone may have an important message to pass on to you.

I have always had “issues” when people look down on others instead of at them. As humans we are all the same species existing at the same time and therefore we are really all on the same level.  No matter where you stand in the chain of command, you are still subject to the same universal laws. 

After I had been living in Ohio for a month, I got a phone call from both the Veterinary Technician and Safety Officer informing me of some events that had recently taken place at the park.  Turns out that the person above us all in the chain of command, responsible for starting the environmentally unsafe cleaning practices and refusing to stop them, had gotten fired, by people higher on the chain of command, for another unrelated slip-up that had occurred at the park.

On a personal level, I felt sorry for this particular person and kept her and her family in my prayers.  I knew how demeaning it was to get fired from a job you put most your time and effort into. However, I cannot deny that I was also happy to hear this news, since I sincerely felt it was in the best interest of both the employees and the animals in the Animal Forest.  This was one of upper management’s decisions I was in actually in agreement with, and it gave me hope for the future of the park.

I knew some justice had been granted from somewhere though I was not absolutely sure of its source.  I tried my best to focus my rejoicing on the recognition a weak link in the chain had been fixed, and discouraged myself from urges to speak smugly at the expense of the person who had reaped deserved repercussions. 

 My friends also informed me the park had begun recycling again.  I concededly wondered if it was because of the request I had made to the man from the US Department of Labor.  Regardless of how it occurred, I was very glad to hear it was happening. I found justice in my co-workers and friends who knew the truth of the matter in their hearts. I found justice in hearing I was the topic of an Environmental Studies class at the local college.

 They gave me an offer with everything I ever wanted, money and reinstatement in my old job, but still I had to refuse it.  In order to take it the park wanted me to promise I would never tell my story to anyone.  Unfortunately, there was no way I could make them that promise. I had arrived in my current situation because of my willingness to pass on information to others that I thought would make a positive change in the way things worked. The more I thought about it, by not taking the money and avoiding all the paper work was much easier than carrying out my plan to get even.

But even if I was going after the money in hopes to give it to a charity so everyone could see my unselfishness, there was still an element of greed involved, even if it was a good thing.  Sometimes when certain actions we take in life may be motivated by both the right and wrong reasons, and it becomes difficult to say which influence one might be under at any given moment.
