Charging the battery on the Honda Civic Hybrid

Hey folks,
Question for ya. I just bought the Honda Civic Hybrid and I am doing a lot of in-town driving. How can I better charge my battery? Are there any tricks? It's been snowy so I've been doing quite a bit of the gas-break gas-break thing. Also, why doesn't it do the auto-stop every time I stop at a light. It seems to only do it when the battery is real low. Wouldn't it be better if it did it all the time? thanks!!
