Why is dairy taboo?

Hi! I was just wondering, why is it that some vegetarians who become vegetarians because they love animals decide not to have dairy products, either? I can't figure out while people do that and it doesn't make any sense to me. So if someone can please explain to me...thanks! Just e-mail me if it's not too much trouble. Thank-you! =)
