Wow does this sound familiar!! I am dealing with the EXACT same thing right now, and am planning on offering to cook, and go food shopping with them so that I can "monitor" everything to make sure I can eat it.
I know you want to be polite and have proper etiquette, but I think that some of that needs to be returned. If your sister knows that you are vegetarian, then you are right- she could have at least made some side dishes without meats in them! But try explaining to her how you feel, or offer to bring something, or even come over early to her house and help her cook. This has been a bonding experience for me and my family- maybe it will be for you and yours as well.
